Dr Garth Jennens is one of Australia's most experienced Applied Animal Behaviourists, with forty years consulting and researching in animal behaviour, management, welfare and training.
Since 1989 he has worked privately as an Animal Behaviour Consultant in Perth and Brisbane. Now resident in Sydney, he provides veterinarians and their clients with professional consultations on all species of domestic and farm animals — ensuring treatment is carried out by a qualified animal behaviourist.
He graduated from the University of Waikato with a Master of Social Sciences degree majoring in Zoology and Psychology, including a master's thesis on the behaviour of large farm animals. In 2003 he completed a doctorate in animal behaviour at the School of Veterinary Science, Murdoch University, on dog attacks on livestock.
In 1990 he founded the Animal Management Resource EXtension Program (AMREX) and developed it into one of the largest private dog training and behaviour organisations in Australia, putting over 5,000 dogs and their owners through its courses. Through AMREX he implemented community-based programs such as Barkline (the behaviour helpline), rehoming assessment procedures, bite-prevention strategies and consulting work with local authorities.
More recently, in partnership, he operated a large dog boarding kennel in Perth alongside private consulting and co-developing “Pupi” dog training. Now semi-retired, his experience with several thousand consultations means he is well placed to advise pet owners and treat their animals.
